Taking Liberties

Art Van Go poster

Art Van Go is a supplier of art materials, originally by taking a van to exhibitions, but now also with internet sales and a shop plus gallery in Knebworth, Herts. The exhibition was a success in that it was extended by several weeks from the date shown on the poster.

Iron Age: my Fen Edge Textiles exhibit at Art Van Go

Iron Age

The inspiration for the piece is again Sutton Hoo, in this case the finds as they were recovered just before the second World War rather than in the cleaned up state (or the replicas) which we now see. The sword was highly decorated, but still an effective fighting weapon. It was found with pieces of belt which, much enlarged, form the background. In England, we tend to think of the Iron Age as ending with the Romans, but there was no fundamental change in technology for many centuries after their departure, and the culture of the Sutton Hoo burials is perhaps not unlike the Greek Iron Age.

I intend to add details of the construction of this piece later.
